On November 15, 2024, Pamela Cantor, M.D., participated in a panel alongside Jim Shelton at the Harlem Children’s Zone Power of Place 2024 event in Miami. This gathering of national leaders, including governors, mayors, educators, physicians, youth advocates, philanthropists, and scientists, focused on advancing social and economic mobility for the most vulnerable children and families across the country.
Harlem Children’s Zone, led by Geoffrey Canada, has long championed a holistic approach to child development—ensuring children have access to physical and emotional health, secure housing, good nutrition, and safe streets to foster learning and career success.
During the panel, Dr. Cantor highlighted key principles from her work, emphasizing the transformative role of experiences and relationships in human development and the critical importance of creating contexts that allow every child to thrive.
“Genes are not the drivers of who we become, experiences and relationships drive our genetic expression. Relationships are powerful biological forces in the body and brain. We have the power to build contexts that reveal the human treasures in our midst.”
